Of course we cannot forget the 30% of Chinese Singaporeans, 20% of Chinese Malaysians, 18% of Hong-Kongnese, and 10% of Macau-ese who also are of Chaozhou/Shantou ancestry. I can understand the guys but the girl does not speak proper Teochew. Teochew is all over the places when it comes to a common language. Teochew language needs to be standardized. Maybe I should be the one who initiates the codification and standardization of the language. what do you think?

I’m a Teochew but I live in Indonesia, and my dialect is quiet different from this, I can’t understand all but my mother can understand this older version one fully XD My grandparent still speaks like this… Ah , such a good relief to listen to it;since I move to this town, I feel sometime miss talking/listening to Teochew like back in hometown, no one speaks Teochew here despise he/she is a Teochew :(

My family is of Chinese-Vietnamese background. My dad’s side was from the south and mom from the North. None of them are Teochew although there were a lot. A lot of Hakkas and people from Xinhui who went there.
By the way, the title is erroneous. The bird in question is a pigeon, not a chicken. In fact, the 2 gals mentioned it. Ru ge (??) in mandarin and lu gab in teochew means pigeon.
In ancient times, there were actually 6 zhous (? or prefectures) in Fujian. We rebelled against the central government but was suppressed. As a consequence, the central government decided to Chao Zhou & Mei Zhou (?? populated mostly by Hakkas) to Guangdong province.
Most of the Teochews went to Thailand or Vietnam. Less came to Singapore/Malaysia. Yes, almost all people of chinese descent in Thailand are Teochews. I am not sure about northern Vietnam but almost all people of Chinese descent in southern Vietnam are Teochews, especially before the fall of Saigon.
Teochew is not related to Cantonese though they reside in the same province. Teochews were actually from Fujian and an off-spring of the Minnan dialect.
i m a teochew live in malaysia.. i agree with u, its hard to learn.. here we normally speak hokkien(Fujian) rather than teochew(chaozhou)..both r min nan yu.. i can only understand less than half of their conversation…
my grandma speaks it, my mom and her sisters understand it. so I’d think it’s not impossible. it kind of sounds like Vietnamese.
Good luck with that – I know of people who have lived in Chaozhou for 8 years and not managed to pick it up!
ChaoZhouHua is not much like cantonese at all, close to min nan yes. Niether my mandarin speaking friends nor my cantonese speaking friends can understand a word of it!
Great video – ChaoShan cooking is the best! But there are no chickens here, it is pigeon/dove…
So amazing that there are so many ChaoShan people around the world as the cities are quite small by Chinese standards.
